DUDE!!! That trailer was awesome! I never saw the original Guilala film but this really looks cool! The spfx however look a lil low budget which kept the 60s feel to it. For the first impression, I like it!!! Thanks for sharing the trailer! I want to pick up a Guilala fig now. haha

So I'm back from the NYAFF and I must say I enjoyed Guilala's latest film. Set aside all seriousness and sit back for 90 mins for some simple laughs especially when the US president speaks or if you also know the native languages of each country's leader. Otherwise subtitles are your friend. Warning, spoilers ahead in review...

The movie takes place in Japan (of course) where the world's leaders from the United States, France, England, Germany, Italy, Canada, Russia, and Japan come together to discuss about global warming. Suddenly a space spore monster arrives and starts destroying the city in Hokkaido who's attracted by energy. After a kid comes up with the monsters name to be Guilala, soldiers take the boy away and then they started using Guilala as the monsters name.

Guilala has a very strange & unique design. he has a beak, glowing eyes, radio antennas, some drooping tube thing on the center of his head, chubby hands and feet, bug like tail, and these dumpling rapping trims around it's bumpy body.

Each of the country leaders each attempts to destroy the monster to prove that their own countries to be the greatest but all fail miserably. Guilala actually laughs and dances in two different scenes. The movie definitely has a Showa feeling to it. When just about all the world's leaders runs out of ideas of what kind of weapon that can destroy Guilala, the biggest shocker is that Kim Jong Il makes a surprise appearance and holds all the leaders hostage except France (as he was having some "fun" with a translator.) So of course, Kim Jong Il always wanted to use a nuclear weapon and now here's his chance. But guess what, a scientist found out that all the weapons used on Guilala were just feeding him and a nuclear explosion would just burst the "spore monster" all over the world spreading little Guilalas everywhere. But don't worry, Japan has a sacred savior. 2 reporters come upon natives in the mountains who do a really really strange dance for their god, Take-majin. When the natives and the 2 reporters put aside their differences and do this wacky dance, they summon Take-majin who arrives in time to take the nuclear missile up his @$$. Ok that really didn't make any sense, wouldn't he be blown to smithereens? I guess he's a god after all.... So Guilala gives Take-majin a beat down but then Take-majin starts fighting like Ultraman and finishes him by decapitating Guilala with an "Ultra Slash" and Guilala's body explodes. The last part was very unexpected.

Sure the dialogue was wacky, the monster was silly, and our hero "take-majin" was a strange fit, but it's all in good fun!

I saw this too and I actually liked it. Maybe I am just so starved for some new kaiju movies that my standards are low. What didn't you like about it?

The acting is terrible, and the two respectable scenes are stock footage. No offense, but I do think that the lack of serious kaiju is wearing down all of our standards. I tried to like it, but the final battle was just terrible.

No offense taken. I think we are probably both right that I just want a damn monster movie to watch. I actually watched Final Wars the other day just to make sure I still detest it. Hurry up LP!!!

Now, I don't want them to rush. I can't wait, but I want a Godzilla movie that will make Toho realize it is still a money maker, and that there is still a fan base.

On topic, the one thing the movie did right was nearly perfectly recreate Guilala.
